Active Teaching Assistants
Sunny Tseng (2021 Sep – present) is a PhD student in NRES. She has been enjoying the beauty of R since she was an undergraduate student and throughout her MSc research. In particular, she is currently using R for avian acoustic analysis. She has TAed in the UBC Master of Data Science program, which got her into teaching/discussing data analysis with people.
Miguel Arias Patino (2023 Sep – present) is a PhD candidate in NRES and an Engineer with a Master’s degree in Geomatics. His primary objective is to contribute to the development of effective solutions for environmental issues through the application of spatial and analytical methods. Currently, his research focuses on enhancing cumulative pressure mapping and wilderness mapping for the province of British Columbia. Miguel has experience in GIS, remote sensing, spatial analysis, and the application of cutting-edge techniques, including spatial regressions, land use and land cover change models, geostatistics, and machine learning. He has honed these skills using programming languages such as Python and R.
Behnoosh Roknaldini (2023 May – present) holds a master’s degree in climatology and is currently pursuing a second master’s degree in NRES. She also works as a Research Assistant in the Hydro-Climate Informatics Lab at UNBC. Her research focuses on “Quantifying Climate Change Impacts on Freshwater Thermal Regimes in the Upper Peace River Basin in northern BC” . She develops various machine learning and hybrid models to simulate and predict freshwater temperatures. She uses R/RStudio for conducting her analyses. Behnoosh is passionate about supporting others with their research and data analysis.
Previous Teaching Assistants
Halena Scanlon (2023 Sep – 2024 Apr) is a Masters student in NRES, with her research focusing on linking Inuit and scientific knowledge of Arctic char. Specialising in qualitative research, she has used NVivo throughout her studies and professional career. She is excited to support others in their research.
Lisa Koetke (2021 Sep – 2023 Sep) studies the impact of forest harvesting on moose as a PhD candidate in NRES. She has used R for most of her analyses since being an undergraduate student. She understands both the excitement of seeing results and the steep-learning curve associated with most analyses.
Juan Ramirez Delgado (2022 Sep – 2023 Apr) is a PhD candidate in NRES studying the relationship between landscape changes and the risk of extinction of terrestrial mammals. He has been using R since his undergrad studies and throughout his professional career. He is excited about helping people with their research methodologies and statistical methods.
